Guidelines to keep your children safe on the Web

The internet is so vast (at the last count around 100 million users) that many parallels can be drawn between cyberlife and every day life. Just as you wouldn’t let your young child go outside, free to go anywhere, the same must be thought of about the internet. The internet changes every day, and some sites might include unsuitable material for children one day, even if they don’t at the moment. You should sit with your children until they are used to using the internet, helping them to develop skills in recognising and avoiding danger on their own. Tell your kids to ask permission before they give out any personal information on the internet.

All the links on our LINKS PAGE are carefully picked to be informative, fun and interesting for children. We do however suggest the following tips:

If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer you can go in to the properties and add ratings to your internet browser. if the browser then notices any damaging content before opening the page, it will not show it but ask for a password first.

Six Rules for Safe Surfing:

1 Parents must always know "where" their children are, on and offline.

2 Young children should be accompanied when exploring the Web.

3 Older children need to know their parents' rules before they surf on their own. Children need to abide by those rules.

4 Children should not divulge personal information to anyone in cyberspace. Instruct them to never give out their full name, address, phone number, or your credit card.

5 Children with questions about a site should check with Mum, Dad, or another trusted adult.

6 Parents should regularly discuss the Internet with their kids. Talk about what you see and do online.
