When it comes to food, the word natural refers to something that comes directly from and co-exists with nature, unaltered by humans. However, in grocery markets (especially in the US), the word natural does not have an existing definition. Thus, “natural” products may contain: GMO, pesticides, herbicides, growth hormones, and antibiotics. While the FDA believes that natural products should be free of synthetic and artificial additives, no formal definition is given to what natural means. In other words, the natural label is quite useless. Still, according to studies, 77% of people trust “natural” labels. Shoppers should be smart, not be fooled by marketing techniques, and always read, and understand the ingredients in their food.
